During this period, with a population of 27,000, Charters Towers was Queensland’s largest city outside Brisbane and operated one of the few regional stock exchanges in Australia. Affectionately known as ‘The World’, it was said that anything one might desire could be had in the ‘Towers’, leaving no reason to travel elsewhere. The ghosts of gold Heritage Trail is one of Charters Towers’ most prized tourist attractions. Comprised of four distinct venues around the city, the Visitor Information Centre, the Stock Exchange Arcade, Venus Gold Battery and Towers Hill, this trail truly brings history to life. Tickets for all sites are available from the Visitor Information Centre. Look for the ghosts of gold symbol.
