CHARTERS TOWERS ARCHIVES GROUP The Archives group focuses on all aspects of Charters Towers’ past, collecting and preserving the history of the gold city and the region. It is located inside the Excelsior Library and is open Monday to Wednesday from 10am to 2.30pm and Sundays from 10am to 12pm. FLORA AND FAUNA ON TOWERS HILL Early morning or late evening are the best times to discover the wildlife living in and around Towers Hill. You’ll see several species of macropods such as the Eastern Grey kangaroo, the Whiptail and Allied Rock wallabies. Watch as the Whistling Kites hunt their prey. Be sure to take a look at the Landcare rehabilitation project at the base of the hill. WWII BUNKERS Explore the bunkers built on Towers Hill during World War II for the storage of munitions. Two bunkers located halfway up the hill have been given a 21st century makeover and feature audio and visual presentations telling the story of life in Charters Towers at the time. Ttour the area at your own leisure. There are 30 bunkers on the hill, built by the Australian forces.
